The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Isn’t this guy adorable?

This is one of the 97 giant pandas at the ChengduIMG_2584_2 Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The Chengdu Research Base has become a famous attraction in China. It is home to giant and red pandas as well as a restaurant and a panda history museum.

The panda enclosures at the Chengdu Research Base are unique. Unlike the typical American zoo, there is not a glass wall between you and the pandas, which makes for a personal and hands on experience. The red panda enclosures are so open that some pandas will leave the enclosure and walk alongside the visitors.

I would recommend getting to the Chengdu Research Base early in the day. The pandas are feed in the morning, so they are guaranteed to be outside eating instead of in their indoor enclosures. The park opens at 7:30am, but we got there around 8:30am, and the pandas were still breakfasting.

There are plenty of ways to get to the Chengdu Research Base. I took a cab from downtown Chengdu with 3 friends for 50 RMB. There are also public shuttle buses that leave from a variety tourist attractions within Chengdu.
